Crafters in solidarity with the central Italian earthquake victims

Update September 23, 2016:
Fundraising report
Update September 20, 2016:
Saturday September 10th, the fundraising has closed.

Together we donated 298 handmade creations and raised a grand total of 2442 euros!

(editor's note: the sum has been made from receipt sent to Etsy Italia Team)

Donations have been made to the organizations we gathered below in this post; we are proud of these acts of generosity, made by and of what we can do the best: our creativity, our handmade creations and our hearts!
A HUGE thank you to all those who took part in the campaign by offering their creations or by buying from others. Thanks to all the customers, to who spread the word, to Atelier10 members who joined the campaign and all the American Etsy teams who helped by creating treasuries about the campaign. To all of you, THANK YOU! Your action, whatever small you think it was, meant a lot.
Now we hope the the material damages of the earthquake will be soon fixed, so the people of those villages can go back to their lives; as for  the soul ones, we know it will take much longer.

-------

Once again Italy has been shaken: there was a strong earthquake the night between 23rd & 24th August with its epicenter on the border between Lazio, Umbria, Marche and Abruzzo regions which seriously affected the small towns of Amatrice, Accumoli, Arquata del tronto and Pescara del Tronto.
The earthquake swarm continues, and the surviving inhabitants find themselves without a roof over their heads, without basic necessities. While the search for survivors continues, we invite you and all creative people, to launched by an act of generosity which, though small actions, can bring big relief to those who now have lost everything in the disaster.

Our community of crafters, makers, creative and young new artisans is varied, spread throughout Italy and the world but, thanks to the Internet we can still do something.  With an apparently insignificant gesture we can be close to our compatriots in these days of hardship and pain.
Let’s gather around them in a virtual hug, making ourselves useful in some way and not leaving them alone.

Operazione San Valentino conclusa!

Welcome to the market

Vivace e diretto.
Fabrizio, 26 anni, studia Architettura. Cordiale e perspicace.
Michela, 25 anni, è una studentessa di Psicologia. Comunicativa e decisa.
Queste le tre personalità che sono dietro a "Welcome to the Market"

"Welcome to the Market" vi aspetta al Black Out Club, via Casilina 713, dalle ore 10.00 alle ore 20.00, ingresso libero, per farvi trascorrere una giornata indimenticabile!

Calendario dell'Avvento - Giorno 13

CUCCIA

Viva Santa Lucia... 2

TRADIZIONE
TRADITION
On 13 December, following a strong famine that had struck Sicily, in Palermo (or Syracuse, no one knows exactly) arrived a ship loaded with grain; people, hungry, didn’t have the time to make flour of it, and cooked the grain the way it was! That ship was regarded as a miracle of Saint Lucia (falling, in fact, that day).
Since that day, it has become a tradition in Palermo, on the day of Saint Lucia, not to eat foods containing flour, but cooking recipes that involve rice and raw cereals: “risotti” (rice-based recipes), “arancini” (similar to croquettes but much larger), stuffed potato pie, and for sweet, "the cuccìa".

INGREDIENTI
- 500 gr. Grano (integrale, non macinato!)
- 500 gr. Ricotta
- 250 gr. Zucchero
- Sale
- Cannella
- Vanillina
- Canditi o gocce/scaglie di cioccolato

INGREDIENTS
- 500 gr. Wheat (whole, not ground!)
- 500 gr. Ricotta cheese
- 250 gr. Sugar
- Salt
- Cinnamon
- Vanilla
- Candies or chocolate chips/drops

Aggiungere all’impasto il grano (precedentemente colato e fatto riposare) e mescolare.
The grain must be kept wet for two days and then cooked with a little salt for at least one hour.
When cooked, put the grain to flow and let it settle for an hour.
Take out the ricotta cheese and leave the water casting until it is dry. Then, with the electric mixer, knead it with sugar and add a packet of vanilla, cinnamon and candied fruit or chocolate (I recommend chocolate!) at choice. Add the corn mixture (previously poured and settled) and mix.
You can put it all in a single container or divide it into several small portions in some bowls, sprinkle with cinnamon as if it were sugar.

RICETTA ORIGINALE
ORIGINAL RECIPE
The above is a more elaborate recipe that is also found in pastries, but the original recipe is much more simpler! My grandmother ate it for breakfast in the morning and it’s very similar to our cup of milk and cereals: wheat boiled in hot milk with 2 teaspoons of sugar and, sometimes, a little cocoa powder.

ALTRE RICETTE
MORE RECIPES
In recent years, pastry chefs have created more delicious variations of this cake, the most common of which involves chocolate pudding instead of ricotta.

Etsy at Abilmente, the Vicenza creativity fair

[Italian Version]
From the 20th to the 23rd of October 2011 some Etsy crafters and I (madamaRobè) were protagonists at the Etsy Atelier at “Abilmente” in Vicenza (Italy) the most important Italian fair about creativity that twice each year has about 47.000 visitors each time. For the first time Etsy was there and the main aim of the Etsy Atelier was to promote Etsy, to explain how it works, the philosophy behind it and furthermore to show what it means being an active member on Etsy.

We showed our creations and we proposed several courses but above all we explained to hundrends of people what Etsy is and how to use it, trying to communicate our enthusiasm and love for Etsy. We explained that Etsy is a special place plenty of exceptional people and amazing creations and, with the help of the joyful look of the atelier and our mood, we think we succeeded to spread the love for Etsy, creativity and the handmade’s world.

To give to our Atelier the peculiar Etsy touch was definitely the wonderful mounting suggested by the organizational staff of the Vicenza’s fair: all was orange and white as the Etsy logo.
The Atelier became soon a creativity lab where ideas bloomed and developed (you’ll see the results soon in our shops!). It was easy to recreate the Etsy atmosphere in our Atelier, it came naturally and it was like we’ve known each other for a long time, this was possible thanks to the main value of Etsy: bringing heart to commerce and making the world more fair, more sustainable and more fun.
Furthermore thanks to many of our Etsy friends that visited us the Etsy vibe was amazing. Here some of their comments:

Manuel of Art in Venice:
“The Atelier was really artistic, full of sources of inspiration, really energetic, plenty of interested people! Above all the atmosphere was cheerful and it was wonderful to meet people I usually meet in the Etsy website, it was like we’ve known each other for a long time!”
Lucia of Callmemimì:
“The Atelier was a feast for the eyes! The quantity of the handicraft and crowds of  people gave the idea of joy and creativity! I felt the real spirit of Etsy at the Atelier and I felt I was in a special place.”

Federica of Federicaknits:
“Dazzled by vibrations of the orange Etsy flags I approached the Atelier and it was like entering in a magic world. The stand was beautifully adorned and the atmosphere was really warm, joyful, creative and professional. Congratulations you really did a good job!”
Vera of VeraCreations:
“The Etsy Atelier was the most beautiful of the fair! You could recognize it immediately by the orange Etsy flags. The exposure of the items was perfect and really original! Many people were interested in Etsy and I could meet my Etsy friends!”

Elisa of RelyDesign: “I recognized it from afar: I saw the orange Etsy flags! When I was near I saw my Etsy friends and the atmosphere was joyful and playful. Embraces, laughs, chats created a special harmony between people. There was the chance to know Etsy, to try new techniques and to buy beautiful items.”
Daniela of HandmadeinItaly:
“Beautiful Atelier: colourful, welcoming, in perfect Etsy style!”
Alice of Alice’s Closet:
“I was really curious to discover the Etsy Atelier and when I saw it I realized it was better than I imagined! It communicated what Etsy is: creativity and joy!”

We have to say a big thank you to Etsy and to the organizational staff of the Vicenza’s Fair that permitted us to live this beautiful experience and now some more pictures:

Etsy Craft Party 2011 in Rome

[EN]
This is the second Etsy Craft Party organized by Etsy Italia Team in Rome. We prepared handmade cute decorations for the room (a gym) helped by the tips on the Storque. The Association "Insieme per il Trullo" hosted the party for free, they were so kind! (Trullo is a troubled neighborhood at the edge of Rome, Italy).
We prepared a table with the pictures of some of the member's works and business cards and yep, a table with deliciouos food and drinks.
We had also four nice projects to realize: a funny ring made out of recycled pantyhose, little boxes made out of recycled cardboard, butterflies and shadowboxes made out of recycled cardboard and old magazines. We had a lot of amusement, above all while making some cardboard mustache :D
A picture of us with our elegant mustache will be send to Etsy NY, as suggested on the Etsy's pdf with tips for the Craft Party.

[IT]

Comparirà qui in settimana: galleria baffi.

Quindi, arrivederci a ottobre ;)

Fashion Fascist and Fashion Victim

[Versione italiana]

A friend of mine recently told me that we Italian and French people are considered fashion-fascists. And that's probably true. At least, we like to judge a lot. By my side, I like very much the British Isles' and American tastefulness. I really appreciate - I'm not joking - all the pink hearts, blooming gardens, colorful stripes, swallow and bird related, obsessive design.
I like the complete lack of rules in color matching - that nonetheless gives good results. Moreover, I've always loved bows, weaving embroidery and lace, although we use them in a slightly different way.

AliceCouture

I even start understanding what knitted coasters and teapot cozies are for. Nonetheless, everything I like, I like it because it remains exotic to me, I guess.
Back to our "fashion-fascism"... As the bon mot which sees us associated with spaghetti and pizza, the myth following which Italians are fashion victims is a Boogeyman you can use against your children when they don't want to dress up: “If you don't wear immediately this checked skirt, Armani will come and bring you away!”.

HomemadeBags

For instance, in Italy women are generally wrapped in mortifying black-down jackets, more similar to a duvet than to the Penneys/Primark cheap fancy coats I've seen here around and in London. I'm very envious of your basic wearing.
They also wear tennis shoes more often, anonymous boots or ballerinas rather than stiletto heels, that here are a must - and not only for hanging out at night.
In Italy, again, I see a lot of very short haircuts, the ones that the hair stylist sells you as "easy manageable", while the truth is that he doesn't know what he is doing. Here instead, I've rarely seen a girl without a fine hair head.

Nivule

So, as foreigner, I probably can't see the greater picture.
Is all this talk about fashion our fault?
