Cooking with the crafters #2

This time I'm presenting a recipe given by Paola of Atelierpompadour. It's an amazing chocolate tart. As I told her I could change the recipe to adapt it to my tastes and/or to what I have in my pantry, and so I did a little.
The recipe of this tart says to use milk chocolate for the cream, but I prefered to use dark chocolate, otherwise it woud have been too sweet for my tastes. I even reduced the sugar in the base from 150g to 120g (and next time I could even cut to 100g!).
A suggestion for you is to add walnuts on top and serve this cake with whipped cream: I didn't this time, but next time I'm sure I'll remember!
Also, the best baking tin to use is one like this: http://www.tescoma.cz/pic/623114.jpg
because the dough is very liquid. See that groove in the edge? You can verse the dough in the mold, cook the base and then (when cold) turn it around: it will have a perfect border all around, so you can verse the cream in the middle. Don't worry if you don't have one like this, you can use a regular tart mold, because the cream will harden enough to remain firm and won't drain away.

INGREDIENTS
for the dough:
3.50 oz - white flour
4.25 oz - white sugar
3.50 oz - dark chocolate
3.50 oz - butter (not salted)
3 eggs

for the chocolate cream:
7 oz - dark chocolate
1 oz - butter (not salted)
8.45 fl.oz - whipping cream (not whipped and not cold)

HOW TO
Dough: melt bain-marie chocolate and butter. Verse in a bowl, add sugar and mix well. Then add the eggs and mix again. Sift flour while mixing. Verse in the mold and bake at 355°F for 20 minutes.
Cream: melt bain-marie chocolate and butter. Pour the cream in while mixing, very slowly (so it won't make the chocolate lumpy).
Verse the chocolate cream on the base and cool it. When it won't be too hot, put the tart in the fridge for one or two hours.

INGREDIENTI
per l'impasto:
100g - farina
120g - zucchero
100g - cioccolato fondente
100g - burro
3 uova

per la crema al cioccolato:
200g - cioccolato fondente
30g - burro

Aggiungere le uova e amalgamarle all'impasto.

[eng] A treasury is a list of items curated by Etsy users; general rules are to feature one item per seller and to not include one's own items. Etsy admins can feature a treasury on the front page which may result in lots of visits and sells for those included.

[eng] the BNR is a special treasury where by buying one of the items of the shop listed, the buyer can get to be featured there replacing the shop she bought from. Rules vary and are usually explained in the description of the treasury itself. It is also called (ironically) BIP because BNR treasuries are never featured to the front page (then they're censured) due to their (usually, but not always) shabby look made of cheap items which may sell easily.

Milan Fashion Week meet Handmade on EtsyItalia

The most important month for spring/summer 2012 fashion with Paris comes close to the end, but Etsy Italy focuses on Milan, where the fashion week has just ended hosting designers bringing worldwide taste and elegance of Italian fashion. Let’s start:

Gucci, black and gold geometric pattern, fringes and sequins suggest a modern Charleston, congratulations to Frida Giannini, Gucci creative director. Among Etsy Italian sellers here’s the item matching black and gol style, a leather statement necklace with little gold studs made by Chickslab, less twenties and more space age , very beautiful as well.

Dolce & Gabbana, for next summer the collection is very rich with bustier dresses printed with tomatoes and Mediterranean kitchen ingredients, flower lace in pastel colors or black and finally lace dresses with gems, colored stones and sequins. From Etsy a necklace made by Sobby, the mix of coral and turquoise stones with silver parts, a perfect summer combo.

Gabriele Colangelo, a new star in the italian fashion system, the collection shows clean shapes and light fabrics, neutral teints with fluo touches and organza parts, plain or embellished with blue sea sequins. On Etsy I’ve chosen some paper earrings made by Manufactapaper, their geometric shape and baldness reminds me this Colangelo dress.

See you on Etsy!

Halloween

[versione italiana]

"[...]Halloween o Hallowe'en is the name of a holiday of pre-Christian origin, now typically American and Canadian, celebrated on October 31. However, its antique origins lose themselves in the remotest past of European traditions: they date back to the time when tribal populations used to divide the year in two parts, according to the livestock transhumance. In the period between October and November, since the ground was preparing itself for Winter time, people need to recover livestock indoor to guarantee its survival during the cold season: this is Halloween period.[…]

Source: Wikipedia (translated from italian version)

Halloween is a folk tradition, particularly popular in Anglo-Saxon countries. The charm and the magic of this holiday fascinate Italian people too, although it doesn’t belong to our culture.

Pumpkins, spiders’ webs, bugs, skeletons, monsters: these characters come to life in the night of October 31, every single year.

Children have fun going house-to-house after the sunset, wearing typical Halloween costumes, and saying the famous expression “Trick or treat?”; it’s recommended to answer “Treat!” and to give them some candies… or the homeowners will be victims of some funny tricks!

On the occasion of Halloween night, we can decorate our home with garlands, fake webs or the famous empty pumpkin, illuminated thanks to a candle inside it.

Vicki Shields shared an easy tutorial to make pumpkin shaped garlands: easy and funny, you can involve your children in this project!

INTERVIEW: Going to know... LeelaCreations

Today we're going to know another member of Etsy Italia Team and her soft and lovely dolls: LeelaCreations!

1. What's the name of your business, what do create and sell?
The name of my shop is Leela-creation. Leela (read LiiLa) is a Sanskrit word meaning "game", I' ve choosense it because I have always liked it and because for me creating is like a beautiful game.
In the shop I sell Spelt husks pillows of various dimensions, cherry stone cushions and Waldorf inspired dolls.

2. What are your inspirations in your art and life?
Sometimes it's as if I had a fire inside that burns and inspires me to create certain things. Even before learning to make dolls, I felt a great attraction and it was a love at first sight: I made one, then another and another soon after and since then I have not stopped.
For the cushions has been more or less the same thing ... I knew, or better to say I felt that was what I wanted to do and I knew I could do.
Other times the world around me inspires me, surfing the internet or a nice chat with a friend or a walk in the nature...

3. Do you listen to music while you create? If so, what?
The music in my house never fails ... with a musician-composer partner, the music I listen to most often are the pieces he composed and performed live directly (for those curious about it on my blog you will find the player with some of his compositions), otherwise the iPod is always on in "Shuffle Songs" that entertains me with a repertoire of over 3000 songs.
But if I choose something I usually listen to pieces by Brazilian authors ... I must tell you that ... I like the samba!
While it is the day I use the sewing machine, all the music falls silent and I listen only it : I love its beat rhythmically on the fabric!

4. What is your studio or work space like?
Unfortunately I have not my own studio, working mainly on the kitchen table when not occupied by another.

5. What 3 things can't you live without?
my daughter and my family, a notebook with pen to write scribble random thoughts and a moment in the day all to myself.

6. What is the best creative advice you have been given?
"The finish and attention to detail are very important, as well as the work itself '.

7. What's new? Any products or projects you'd like to share?
One of my projects is to increase the production of dolls and also create a small production of handmade toys (such as animals made grilled, puppets, capes and crowns to become knights and princesses)
Another wish would be to better learn how to sew up a pack of clothes and succeed even in a production staff ... from design to suit!

Halloween secrets

October is here and we already know the Etsy trends of the month. October will run around Halloween, here some interesting info.
This is a very ancient festival, linked to the Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-an or sow-in) that means "summer's end" in Gaelic language. During the night all the fires were doused and then lit again thanks to a large Bonfire were bones of slaugthered animals burned. The border between our world and the Otherwolrd became thin, mankind and supernatural creatures may meet, walk the same paths, eat the same food supplies (the traditional trick or treat). Both harmless and harmful spirits might pass through the border, so to avoid harm, humans disguises theirselves with costumes and masks.

VisualAppeal

After the Christianization Samhain was replaced by All Saints' Day and finally named Halloween (from "All Hollows Eve) from the XV century in England.
Nowadays Halloween is very famous in the United States and in Europe, the birthplace, it is back in the last years.
Remember to lit a candle and put it on your window, it will show the way to your Ancestors, then put on a costume or a mask so harmful spirits can't touch you!

Now some useful tips. Color trends of this month will fit Halloween: black, orange, purple, white, red and the rich, warm autumn/fall colors: rust, golden yellow, muted greens, all brown shades, bordeaux, wine.
October's birthstone: Opal; astrological signs: Libra and Scorpio.

A new special feature: cooking with the crafters

Here we start a new blog section: cooking with the crafters!
Many of us love to cook, know special recipes, and sometimes we've even shared them in our Etsy forum.
So, we thought it would be nice to share with you too: every two weeks a team member will send me a recipe, I'll try it at home and report it to you in the blog.
Of course we are beginning with mediterranean recipes, then we'll probably move towards more exotic ways of cooking. Anyway, we are not proposing just “typical Italian recipes”, we want that our wonderful and magic ingredients mix together with imagination and originality.
The most important thing to be a good cook is to always use good quality ingredients (and I'm especially talking to non italian readers). Look for fresh, seasonal and local vegetables, fruits, meet and fish; if you cook pasta use only the best Italian brands (here I use just two or three brands). Remember also to use cold meats, salami and cheeses made only in its country of origin: “parmesan cheese” is not real parmigiano and mozzarella must be made in Italy (the best one is made in Campania or Puglia).
Last but not least, a little suggestion to enjoy the best of our recipes... share these precious moments with someone you love! There's nothing better than cooking and eating with someone special.
So, here's the first recipe, super fast and super good!

Wholemeal spaghetti with zucchini, feta cheese and lemon. (for 2 people)

INGREDIENTS:
7 oz. – italian wholemeal spaghetti
5 – small-medium size zucchini
3 oz. – greek feta cheese
juice and zest of half a lemon
extra virgin olive oil, salt, pepper

HOW TO:
Bring a tall pot of water to a boil.  Wash the zucchini and cut them into small pieces while you wait.  Remember to wash the lemon too.
Stir-fry the zucchini with a little e.v.o. oil in a wok (or a regular pan) on medium-high temperature until they're golden brown, do not add water or salt now. When they are almost ready you can add the lemon juice and the zest cut into tiny slices. When the zucchini are cooked add the cheese cut into cubes and 3-4 spoons of the boiling water to make the sauce creamier.
When the water boils add salt and the spaghetti. Drain the pasta “al dente” (follow the cooking time on the box) and sauté it in the sauce in the wok for a couple of minutes. Add a little pepper and serve hot!
Buon appetito!

Spaghetti integrali con feta, zucchine e limone. (per 2 persone)

INGREDIENTI:
200gr – spaghetti integrali
5 – zucchine chiare (medio-piccole)
85gr – feta greca
olio e.v.o., sale grosso, pepe q.b.

PREPARAZIONE:
Servite calda e buon appetito!
