26 dicembre 2010

Twelve nights from Christmas

6th of January is near and the star is her, riding a broom, with a bag on her back, patched clothes, smiling or unsettling, hanging or on a pedestal, small or very large: "Befana"!
The name Befana is an alteration of the word Epiphany (apparition).
A lot of Italian villages and cities celebrate Befana's day and wait for the Old Lady and her myth, which had a large success in the past, in particular in Veneto, Tuscany and Lazio countries. As yesterday, nowadays Befana brings as a gift: sweets, dried and fresh fruit, toys, mainly dolls (for example the pigotte dolls, stuffed with fabric and rags) but she leaves to bad children only stockings full of coal.

Tirabaralla

Befana's origins go back to ancient Rome, to the Sigillaria, a feast in honour of Janus (from here the name of the first month of the year, Januarius in latin language) and Strenua. Strenua was the goddess of strength and endurance. Romans dedicated to her a temple near Colosseum and considered her as a goddes who presides over the gifts for the New Year. First gifts were simple items rich of symbolic meaning: laurel or olive branches, figs and honey, sometimes dates, as a good omen for a sweet year. Sigillaria began offering the janual, buns with wheat flour, anise and honey. Children received the sigilla (doll and animal shaped cookies) as a gift.
During the Middle Age pagan rites was replaced or included in Christian holydays and Strenua was replaced by the Befana, which remembers a witch, with her broom, magic and mystery.

Celestefrittata

As written on the Storque, January trends are the same of the past two months, with the add of Valentine's day and a curiosity: January is the month of hot tea, so go with teacups, kettles, pots, confections and tea cozy :)

Cooking with the crafters #5

Today a second course. We need it after a pasta, a soup, a cake and biscuits, isn't it?
The recipe is SUPER EASY and ingredients are just a few, probably you have them already at home. I know octopus is not very common out of the Mediterranean area, but if I'll make you want to try it go immediatly to buy one (frozen octopus is perfectly ok, even better then the fresh ones).
This recipe comes from a restaurant in Florence (Italy) famous for thir pizza. Actually I find their pizza horrible, but they cook a great great fish! Also they bake the octopus in their brick oven and, if you are so lucky to have one, I suggest you to use it because it gives a very special flavour to this dish.
There are no variations to this recipe (and it's strange because I always change them!), I only sugegst you to boil the octupus in vegetables broth and not just in salted water, you can also add a good red hot pepper, it want give the "spicy", it will just add taste. And if you are a celiac you can exchange the regular bread crumbles with gluten free bread crumbles: they are as good as the regular ones, I use it all the time.
You can serve as a boundary: roast potatoes or a salad dressed with a vinaigrette made of french mustard, evo oil, a little vinegar and salt.

INGREDIENTS (for 2 people if served as a second course, 3-4 people if you serve it as an appetizer):
2.2lbs - frozen and gutted octopus
2 vegetables stock cubes
the juice of 1 lemon
1 table spoon - bread crumbles
e.v.o. oil, salt - as needed

1 cucchiaio - pangrattato
olio e.v.o., sale - q.b.
HOW TO:
Defrost the octopus (if you have one big octopus it will take around 3 hours if you leave it in cold water in it's box). In a big tall pot prepare the vegetables broth (add salt to the water) and immerse the octopus only when water is boiling. I know a trick that should make it even softer: before leave it in the pot, dip it three times. I don't know if it actually needs this, but I always do it!
It will take at least 40 minutes to cook, you know when it's ready when you can easily stick it with a fork. Leave the octopus in it's water to cool, then drain it and cut it in big pieces (mind the beack! even if the octupus was already gutted, they always leave it). Put the octupus in a baking pan, drizzle with a good amount of oil and the lemon juice, marinate for 15-20 minutes. During this time you can turn on the oven at the max temperature and allow the oven to warm up well.
Now sprinkle the octopus with the crumbles and bake for about 15 minutes, use easily the crisp function of the oven. Do not serve hot, serve SCORCHING!! Buon appetito!

PREPARAZIONE:
Buon appetito!

INTERVIEW: Going to Know... Scacco alle Regine!

Today we are going to know an artist from Northern Italy: her name is Gloria, from Scacco alle Regine shop! She is an opera singer and the mind behind the gorgeous creations of this shop: jewelry full of wit and fun, with a glamourous touch and a unique style! She is also a long time member ot the Etsy Italia Team.

1. What's the name of your business, what do create and sell?
The name of my shop is Scacco alle Regine (Checkmate to Queens), I make costume jewelry and hair accessories for all women who want to feel like... Queens!
Regine!
 2. What are your inspirations in your art and life?
The vintage and the pop art are two 'environments' that significantly influence my artistic expression, but I'm inspired really from everything: nature, decor, design, advertising, food products at the supermarket, news items, movies, literature, music, ...
  3. Do you listen to music while you create? If so, what?
Music is a double-edged sword: sometimes it's a quiet companion, other times it's a violent kidnapper of concentration...!
I really like the background music, jazz, soundtracks of movies, tango music and those Parisian accordion and bandoneon, but often I make my items without having put any CD... However the music never lacks, because my husband is a pianist and Chopin resounds often in our rooms ...
 4. What is your studio or work space like?
My creative space is very essential: a desk, a lovely comfortable leather chair, some shelf and 3 fantastic Ikea drawers that contain any of the materials in the unaltered state, before becoming Scacco alle Regine!
5. What 3 things can't you live without?
Veeeeery difficult question... How can I reduce a world at 3 things?! Or I say you only one or I say you a thousand!!! Then I choose the one: Internet!
 6. What is the best creative advice you have been given?
I have not received any advice in particular, but personally I agree with Ken Robinson thoughts: do school kill creativity. And I think that the film titles of Lina Wertmuller are wonderful tips about creativity !!!
7. What's new? Any products or projects you'd like to share?
I am not patient: when I think one thing I want to realize it immediately... so at the moment I have no projects! I just created a small collection for girls that I called Little Princess and I am selling these items... to the big girl instead of the little! :-D
However, I suggest you to follow www.scaccoalleregine.it always, because the site is updated weekly with many new features, promotions and contests!

A gift tale

Each year the same story, despite the promise that we will buy all the gifts in advance, the days before Christmas we run to do featureless or useless items.
Etsy would be a pleasant option. We can choice the rigth gift for each of our closest friends or relatives, without stress or lines. So, online purchases become a pleasure, and the traditional search about the right gift enters a more human dimension.
From the Storque a list of useful tips both for crafters and buyers:

Ireneagh

INTERVIEW: Going to Know... Passionarte!

Today we are going to know an artist from the charming island of Sardinia: her name is Ombretta, from PassionArte shop! She creates beautiful items for weddings and home decor and she is a long time member ot the Etsy Italia Team.

1. What's the name of your business, what do you create and sell?
My little shop’s name is PassionArte! I create custom wedding items (especially cake toppers but also ring bearer pillow, place cards, etc.), birthday cake toppers, home decorations.
I've called my shop "PassionArte" thinking to the passion I put into create my objects, my little people.
“Passion” is a word that has a wonderful meaning in a lot of languages (like Italian, English, French and Spanish) and it transmits emotions, energy!

2. What are your inspirations in your art and life?
My mind constantly works! Sometimes, too much and it need a little rest! Ideas come from something I see, a color, the design of an object, the nature, or simply suddenly pop-up for no apparent reason! The process from the idea to the final product listed on the shop is veeeery long! There is a lot of features that must be definied before creating the piece, included something that is not at all creative, like the shipping details. So the initial idea changes a thousand times in my mind until it’s completely clear, right down to the smallest detail! Ehm, yes I’m a bit perfectionist… :P

3. Do you listen to music while you create? If so, what?
I live in a quiet quarter and I like to work in the silence maybe listening to the birdies in surrounding trees! During the evening, if I’m still working on the pieces and not on line, I like listening to the tv.

4. What is your studio or work space like?
I am lucky and have a room for me only, where I can create, store my supplies and leave the pieces drying.

5. What 3 things can't you live without?
The special people that I love (even if they are not “things”!), my house, a pc connected to internet

6. What is the best creative advice you have been given?
There are some techniques that are helpful on developing new ideas, but broadly speaking creativity is a natural process, we only need to allow to our right brain hemisphere to work! So I have found more useful the suggestions, available in internet in a lot of sites, on how to transform the creative idea into a beautiful “product” that meet the customer taste and needs, process that is surely rather complex.

7. What's new? Any products or projects you'd like to share?

Cooking with the crafters - Pumpkin Risotto

[Italian version]

Our section dedicated to Italian traditional recipes returns, at last!

In the autumn period our markets and vegetable gardens abound with  pumpkins, a vegetable typical of this season.

Pumpkin is used for lots of recipes, both sweet and salted.

Today we offer the recipe of a first course: pumpkin risotto.
Pumpkin risotto is a traditional dish of Northern Italy, in particular it is very popular in Lombardy, the home also of pumpkin ravioli.
This risotto is  very easy to prepare, based on simple ingredients, but it tastes great ... It's excellent  when eaten on autumn and winter days.
The origins of pumpkin risotto are modest:  pumpkin was a very poor vegetable that was grown and eaten strictly by peasants.

Ingredients:

 Vegetable stock                       1 litre
Butter                                     50 grams
onions                                    1
Rice                                        400 grams
Pumpkin                                 300 grams
white wine                              ½ cup

Preparation:

1. Clean and chop the onion.
2. Clean and cut pumpkin into cubes  sized about one cm.

3. Sauté the onion in a saucepan with the butter. After 2 - 3 minutes add the diced pumpkin and sauté over low heat. If it becomes too dry and tends to stick to the saucepan and burn, add a few tablespoons of vegetable stock.

4. Cook  the pumpkin for  5 minutes, then add the rice and sauté, stirring frequently. When the rice is toasted, pour the wine and let it evaporate.
5. Now add the stock  a little at a time and let it dry slowly during cooking. Stir from time to time, making sure the rice does not become too dry.
6. After about 12/14 minutes taste the risotto to check whether it is done.
Now the risotto is ready!
You can  taste it this way or make it even tastier by adding a generous sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese.
..
Enjoy!
