EIT for Etsy

In the past weeks a big hurricane hit Cuba, Haiti and Jamaica, and its devastating power reached also the east coast of the United States.

Sandy - this is the name of the hurricane - hit also New York, which is one of the cities that have suffered more damages, especially in the lower side of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.
Due to the floods and fires many public services were blocked, as shown by the New York Times, and a prolonged blackout turned off the spotlight on the skyline of the city.

In this situation, Internet has an important role to provide real time  information and to handle emergencies, for example through Twitter.

EtsyItaliaTeam sympathy goes to all those who live in the United States and in particular to those who work for Etsy in the site of DUMBO, Brooklyn.
Our team wants to give its contribution to aid collecting and spreading initiatives that can be supported at distance, so we'll keep this post updated hoping that  the woulds that hurricane inflicted can heal soon and the daily life in New York and other cities affected can go to be calm again.

With this hope, we show the images of NY before this catastrophe happened, showing roads, buildings and monuments like we have known and admired them exactly a year ago.

Projects in support of  Sandy emergency:
- Buy handmade! The TeamFab is raising funds by selling the (obviously) fabulous items of its members and you can find all of them HERE. All the proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross.
- A free hot meal, thanks to Citymeals.
- Medical care, thanks to the American Red Cross.

EIT for Charity: Five Lands' Flood

[versione italiana]

In the second half of October, Italy was struck by a frightening wave of storms that caused damage
everywhere, the places most affected are the Liguria and Tuscany, two of our most beautiful regions.
Those of you who do not know the Cinque Terre?

Monterosso, Five Lands, Italy

Vernazza, Five Lands, Italy

Five wonders of nature, a Mediterranean area, which is one of the most pristine of Liguria, and the Tyrrhenian coast. Five miles of rocky coastline enclosed by two headlands, five small towns castled up on spurs of stone into tiny coves, wonderful trails, wild natural environment.
Of which is now no trace remains.

Two of the five small towns have been destroyed, along with other Italian cities that have suffered serious damage. Ten victims, missing, wounded, broken families, people who have lost their homes, their shop, loved places, all overwhelmed by a terrible flood of water that has crumpled cars, uprooted trees and brought it all away.

Monterosso during the flood

Monterosso's damage

Vernazza during the flood

Vernazza's damage

And many others, are the cities we'd like to speak to you, we would like you saw how large and small villages were isolated, and the witness the terror of the inhabitants. And the flood is going on, today is arrived in Genova.

In Monterosso, just a month ago was inaugurated elementary and middle school "Enrico Fermi", which hosts a hundreds of children and which had been renovated and made safe with seismic retrofitting.
Now it is closed again and is severely damaged by the river of mud that has overwhelmed.

Etsy Team Italy has decided to make a donation to help the school to reopen and allow many children to go back to school thanks to the fundraising sponsored by La Repubblica and Sky Italy.
To help the school must make a donation to the account, and indicate how dedicated beneficiary "Alluvione, un aiuto per ricostruire." For more information you can read on the website of La Repubblica, or on that of Sky.
From November 4th to December 4th you can buy the beautiful objects (themed or not) on our charity shop. At the end of the campaign will donate all proceeds to the school children of Monterosso.

EIT for Charity: GECA ONLUS

[versione italiana]

(click on the pic for GECA's site)
My name is Vera. I'm 25 years old and I'm suffering from a rare disease, the ARVC: Right Ventricular Dysplasia Cardiomyopathy.
This is a genetic disease that causes cardiac arrhythmia and is usually characterized by alterations of the right ventricle.
It is not always easy to diagnose and, unfortunately, is little known and undervalued. Its clinical signs usually start during adolescence and early youth (15-25 years of age).

What is it?
The heart is normally made of cells that are arranged in an orderly manner and joined together by intercellular junctions. In patients suffering from arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, a genetic mutation causes the production of defective cardiac proteins that eventually cause damage and destruction of cardiac cells.
A reparative process follows, in which cardiac cells are replaced by fibrous and fat tissues. The damage to heart cells can both lead to a dilation of the right ventricle and to promote the onset of arrhythmias.
The main symptoms of this disease are: palpitations (or irregular heartbeat), syncope (sudden loss of consciousness and fall to the ground), congestive heart failure.
When the arrhythmia is particularly severe can lead to sudden death.
At the moment there is no therapy working on the cause of the disease: there are only several antiarrhythmic drugs that are commonly used to control arrhythmias and, in cases where they are ineffective or particularly dangerous arrhythmias are present, the implantation of a defibrillator is indicated.

I began to experience the first symptoms at the age of 12-13 years, when I used to practice competitive swimming and exercised 2-3 hours every day. The first symptoms were palpitations, tachycardia getting stronger and stronger, loss of strength and a few faintings.
In spite of the failure to understand what was happening to me, I was forced to abandon suddenly my swimming activity and my team.I was feeling a deterioration in my physical condition from month to month and within a couple of years I went from being an athlete to feeling sick and struggling after climbing just a few steps of a stair.
My odyssey among hospitals lasted around 10 years. No doctor could figure out the cause of my very violent tachycardia, often everything was reduced to a supposed invention to receive the attention that any teenager wants... Until one day, on a summer afternoon, at the age of 18, I collapsed in a park with a sudden cardiac arrest.
I consider myself lucky, I would say miraculously so, because some passersby were able to revive me with cardiac massage...But in these years I knew lots of families whose children, apparently healthy and strong, died suddenly during a soccer match or simply at home, in the arms of parents unaware of the disease.
On that occasion I had a defibrillator implanted, but only at the age of 21 years I was diagnosed with ARVD, the University Hospital of Padua, by the cardiologists who had founded the GECA Association a decade earlier.

GECA ONLUS is a non-profit organization founded to support and help people affected by heredo-familial heart diseases and their families.
Founded in 2000, GECA ONLUS now counts 700 members, with 420 families who are active in carrying out programs to support research on these diseases.
In recent years research, especially in Padua, has made great progresses in identifying genes whose mutations cause arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy.
Currently 8 genes have been found responsible for this disease, 4 of which were discovered at the University of Padua.
GECA works to support and promote a proper prevention since the disease is progressive and may manifest sudden death as the first "symptom".
In addition, it created an information center that provides medical and scientific information about heart diseases and arrhythmic behavioral indications, genetic counseling, informational meetings for physicians and the establishment of scholarships to promote medical and genetic research.

Etsy Team Italy, together with all its members, has decided to start a campaign in favor of GECA ONLUS. From July 9 to September 9, you can buy beautiful hearts made by our team members at our charity shop: at the end of the campaign, all proceeds will be donated to the association that takes care of people suffering from this disease and supports the genetic research to fight it.

EIT for charity: northern Italy earthquake

[Versione in italiano]

In the second half of May, northern Italy was hit by a series of earthquakes of considerable magnitude.

The most affected area is the region of Emilia Romagna, between Modena and Ferrara, where many monuments, schools, public buildings and even factories have collapsed, leading to today, May 31, to these numbers of casualties: at least 24 26 people killed, about 350 people injured, about 15000 17000 evacuee (updated to June the 8th), without considering the incalculable damage to the historical, artistic and cultural heritage.

The earthquakes and the collapses go on as the number of displaced people increases: just when people were going to return to their homes after days in the tents, there has been another earthquake (May 29), that caused new victims and the collapse of buildings already damaged from the previous one and also a lot of fear, especially for those who had at last spent their first night at home. The nightmare never seems to end.

The EtsyItaliaTeam wants to contribute by donating the beautiful creations of its members for sale in its charity shop. The proceeds will be donated to region of Emilia Romagna that can use them where necessary to help.
