Interview: going to know... Pirillinca

1. What's the name of your business, what do you create and sell?

My teeny tiny business is called La Pirillinca, it's a strange name, it comes from a limerick a friend told me in High School.
I create various things, I started years ago making candles (that I don't make anymore, even if I like it and I still have tons of wax at my parent's home), then I started making felt, that I still enjoy, but I don't have enough space a the moment to do it (and also have tons of wool at my parent's home), then I started making things with Pirkka Paper (Twistart) and I started sewing too, I didn't get bored with them yet! I'm constantly brainstorming and trying to find new ideas.
At the moment I'm thinking about opening a new shop on Etsy only about fabric items, because I'd like to differentiate better my items. Of my actual shop I don't like that I have all different things, I'd like to have a better recognizable style.

Il mio minuscolo business si chiama La Pirillinca, questo nome strano viene da una filastrocca che un amico mi disse al Liceo.
Creo oggetti diversi, ho cominciato anni fa con le candele (che non faccio più anche se mi piaceva e a casa ho ancora tonnellate di cera), poi sono passata al feltro che mi piace ancora fare, ma al momento non ho abbastanza spazio per mettermi all'opera (e a casa dei miei ho altre tonnellate di lana), poi mi sono data alla carta Pirkka (Twistart) e al cucito, di questi ancora non mi sono annoiata! Sono in un continuo brainstorming per cercare nuove idee.
Al momento vorrei aprire un nuovo negozio con solo oggetti in stoffa, perché vorrei differenziare meglio i miei oggetti. Del mio negozio non amo il fatto che siano tutte cose diverse, vorrei avere uno stile più riconoscibile.

2. What are your inspirations in your art and life?

I'm inspired by everything, actually. It could be nature as well as other people's work. I don't mean to copy other's people work, but when I see a good picture or well made items I really want to improve my work and the only thing I think about is: I want be successful as him/her, I have to do more for my shop because it's the only thing I want.

L'ispirazione me la dà tutto, in realtà. Può essere la natura come il lavoro degli altri artigiani. Con questo non intendo dire che copio il lavoro di altri, ma quando vedo una bella foto o degli oggetti fatti veramente bene voglio davvero migliorarmi e l'unica cosa a cui penso è: voglio avere successo come questa persona, devo sforzarmi di fare di più per il mio negozio perché questa è l'unica cosa che voglio.


3. Do you listen to music while you create? If so, what?

Sometimes. Usually I turn on the tv and listen to the tv programs. If I listen to music, in these days I'm listening to Django Reinhardt and Camille a lot.

Non sempre. Di solito accendo la tv e ascolto i programmi. In questo periodo mi piace ascoltare molto la musica di Django Reinhardt e Camille.

4. What is your studio or work space like?
I don't have one!! I live in a single room apartment, I have a long desk, boxes and some drawers where I keep my stuff, but when I work I use the table of my kitchen (which kitchen?? it's only one room! LOL). I'm looking for a small table to put in the balcony (tiny balcony) so I could work outside. When I lived with my parents it was lovely to work outside in the garden, nature really makes me concentrate more then anything else.

Non ce l'ho uno studio!! Vivo in un monolocale, ho una scrivania molto lunga, scatole e qualche cassetto dove tengo le mie cose, ma quando lavoro uso il tavolo della cucina (quale cucina se è solo una stanza??LOL). Però sto cercando un tavolino per il (mini) balcone così posso lavorare all'aperto. Quando vivevo con i miei era bellissimo lavorare fuori in giardino, la natura mi fa concentrare più di ogni altra cosa.
5. Which are the 3 things you can't live without?

My fiancé (but he's not a "thing"!)
Tea
Food

Il mio fidanzato (anche se non è una cosa)

Ne avrei altre, ma me ne avete chieste solo tre!


6. What is the best creative advice you have been given?

I was always told (and I think so too) that pictures are the main thing you have to improve if you're running an online business. If you have beautiful pictures people are more attracted from your shop for different reasons. First, if you show the item in the best way, people will know how it actually looks without having to see it in person. Second, if people think you have good taste in making pictures, they'll probably think you have good taste on making things too, so buying from you couldn't be the worst thing to do! (Talking about good pictures, take a look at these four italian artists: Samyii, Betsy3, Sumikoshop, Fruccidesign.

Mi è sempre stato detto (e così penso anche io, in effetti) che le fotografie sono la prima cosa da rendere perfetta quando vendi on-line. Se hai belle foto le persone saranno più spinte a comprare da te per diverse ragioni. Primo, se mostri un oggetto al suo meglio, le persone sapranno esattamente come è in realtà senza doverlo vedere dal vivo. Secondo, se le persone vedono che hai buon gusto nel fare le foto, probabilmente penseranno che hai anche buon gusto con gli oggetti che fai, quindi non dev'essere male acquistare da te! (A questo proposito vi consiglio di dare un'occhiata a queste quattro artiste italiane: Samyii, Betsy3, Sumikoshop, Fruccidesign.)


7. What's new? Any products or projects you'd like to share?
As I said before, I'd like to run a new shop where you can find only fabric items, and the old one could remain for the rest or vice versa.
I have an idea in mind from a lot of time, but I need to find good towel fabric...
This month I started two limited edition mini-series of pincushions, they're available from mid July in my Etsy shop, check them out !

Come ho detto prima, mi piacerebbe aprire un nuovo negozio solo per oggetti in stoffa, e mantenere quello vecchio con il resto o viceversa.
Ho in mente un'idea da molto tempo, ma devo trovare ancora una buona stoffa da asciugamani...
Questo mese ho cominciato due mini serie in edizione limitata di puntaspilli, sono disponibili da metà luglio nel mio negozio Etsy, venite a trovarmi!

Interview: going to know... Infinitales

1. What's the name of your business, what do create and sell?
Hallo!!
My shop's name is "Alessandra Fusi's infinitales", and I work mostly as a painter and illustrator of children books.
So in my shop i sell prints of my art, occasionally some original pieces...And everything I can put my art on!
I've always had a thing for crafting and "making stuff", so basicly i think about the things i like, and then I try to find a way to customize them with my designs...And Etsy is a great venue to find new ideas!

Il mio negozio si chiama "Alessandra Fusi's Infinitales", ed io lavoro principalmente come pittrice ed illustratrice di libri per bambini.
Così nel mio negozio vendo stampe dei miei disegni, occasionalmente alcuni pezzi original...E tutto ciò su cui posso declinare la mia arte!
Mi è sempre piaciuto creare e "fare cose", così fondamentalmente penso alle cose che mi piacciono, e poi penso ad un modo per personalizzarle con i miei disegni...E etsy è un posto fantastico dove trovare nuove idee!
2. What are your inspirations in your art and life?
Well..Everything! Seriously, from my six cats to tv commercials. I have a huge collection of illustrated books by my favourite authors and illustrators, I read a lot and watch many movies, I do it mostly because I love stories..But I guess this also helps to keep my imagination active.

Bhe..Tutto! Davvero, dai miei sei gatti agli spot in tv. Ho una bella collezione di libri dei miei autori e illustratori preferiti, leggo molto e guardo molti film, lo faccio soprattutto perchè mi piaciono le storie, ma credo che mi aiuti anche a tener viv la mia immaginazione.

3. Do you listen to music while you create? If so, what?
Aaaah! Such an hard question! I've lost my ability to answer to the question "what kind of music do you listen to" a lot of time ago...The reason is that basicly I could simply say I listen to many genres of music, but than it would way too general, and instead I'm very severe in selecting my soundtrack...
Let's say I listen to rock, folk, neo-folk, and some indie music sometimes...even if some other times I prefer to work only with the sound of silence and birds...

Aaaah! Che domanda difficile! Ho perso la capacità di rispondere alla domanda "che genere di musica ascolti" molto tempo fa...La ragione è che potrei semplicemente dire che ascolto molti generi, ma sarebbe troppo generico, mentre io sono molto severa nella selezione della mia colonna sonora...
Diciamo che ascolto rock, folk, neo-folk, e qualcosa di indie a volte...anche se ci sono delle volte in cui preferisco lavorare soltanto col suono del silenzio e degli uccelli che cantano...

4. What is your studio or work space like?
unfortunately I still live and work at home with my family, hopefully I'll be moving soon and then I will have my personal atelier for sure: and it would be a total whimsy mess, yet very sophisticated! :D

Sfortunatamente lavoro e vivo ancora a casa con i miei, ma spero di muovermi presto, e allora aprirò di certo un atelier: e sarà un vero pasticcio di disordine, ma molto sofisticato! :D
5. What 3 things can't you live without?
My beloved, my art, my cats.

6. What is the best creative advice you have been given?
Never give up. If you feel like you can't face a neverending series of locked doors and go ahead simply lerning a new lesson from each of them, than this life simply doesn't suit you. And do not envy other's success but look at it very closely and learn, learn, learn!!

Non arrenderti mai. Se pensi di non aver la stoffa per affrontare un numero infinito di porte chiuse in faccia e di imparare una lezione da ognuna, allora semplicemente questo lavoro non fa per te. E non invidiare il successo degli altri, ma osservalo molto da vicini e impara, impara, impara!!
7. What's new? Any products or projects you'd like to share?
My latest book is almost finished!!(and this means my holydays are finally about to begin!!) It's going to be my very first book both as author and illustrator, so it's very close to my universe :)
It's going to be published in France in 2010.
And then I'll take part to another collective art show at galerie l'Art de Rien in Paris next october, and this time it's about Peter Pan!!
Oh I love it so!!!

Il mio ultimo libro è quasi finito!! (e questo significa che finalmente le mie vacanze stanno per iniziare!!) sarà il mio primissimo libro come autrice ed illustratrice, perciò sarà molto vicino al mio mondo :)
Uscirà in francia nel 2010.
E poi parteciperò ad un'altra mostra collettiva alla galerie l'Art de Rien a Parigi il prossimo Ottobre, e questa volta sarà su Peter Pan!!
