Spring and Summer are the perfect seasons to celebrate a wedding: the days are longer, the air is warm and there are beautiful flowers for the bouquet!

In this period is simple to choose a beautiful dress and for the more lucky is possible to celebrate the wedding in the open air.

So the next challenge is dedicated to: Wedding!

La primavera e l'estate sono stagioni perfette per celebrare i matrimoni: le giornate sono più lunghe, l'aria è più calda, e ci sono bellissimi fiori per il bouquet!

In questo periodo è facile scegliere un bel vestito e i più fortunati possono celebrare il matrimonio all'aria aperta!

Così la prossima sfida è dedicata al "Matrimonio"!

How to make a Pot by Concreta

In this tutorial i will show you how to make a pot with the SLAB METHOD.
What you need is: a rolling pin to stretch out the clay, two small panelist to give the slab a uniform thickness, a knife to cut it out, a pot to be used as a mould, the barbottina (you can find a tutorial in italian on how to make the barbottina following this link http://con-creta.blogspot.com/2010/02/come-preparare-la-barbottina.html ), and obviously a piece of clay.

The pot i've used is one of my creations made with the pottery wheel and not glazed yet, if you have a similar pot it's the perfect choice, or if you use glazed terracotta pots or plastic pots i suggest you to wrap them with cellophane, or the clay will stick too much to the surface and it will be impossible to remove it. The unglazed pot is the best solution cause its porous surface absorbs the humidity of the clay making our job easier.

Let's start stretching out the clay with the help of the rolling pin using the panelists to get a slab of uniform thickness. Then we can cut it out in the desired shape, for this slab i've cut a square.
After that, you must put the slab inside the mould pot and make it adhere to the mould with the help of a wet sponge.

This is just an idea, you can make variations, for example if you want a more "open" pot you can shape the clay using the outside of the flipped pot.
Now it's time to forget about it for a while.
When the clay is a bit dried you can take it off the mould, it's hard to predict how long it takes, the drying process depends first on weather conditions and on the environment we work as well.

I wanted to make this pot with small feet too, and to do this i flipped it and put it on a support. You just need to scratch the clay where you want to place the feet and the feet as well (that are just small balls of clay) so that the barbottina can stick better.

You must let it dry again a bit, then with a brush you can take away the exceeded barbottina.
When the barbottina is dried you can take the pot away from the support, if the edges are too much irregular you can smooth them with a wet sponge… now you can be as creative as you want.
You can draw some decoration scratching it with a twig, you can use some button as small moulds pushing them onto the clay, and if you are brave enough you can make some hole design with a xacto knife.

I chose a simple decoration made with small moulds made by myself.
Once the pot is completely dried before the firing you can still sand it with fine sandpaper to eliminate imperfections, but be careful not to break the clay, at this stage i ruined several pot.

INTERVIEW: going to know.. wakamesalada

1. What’s the name of your business, what do create and sell?

My business name is Wakamesalada, which is a seaweed salad I often choose at the japanese restaurant. It's an unusual dish, you may like it or hate it, but it's healthy anyway, and the same can be said about the colorful jewels I have been creating for 2 years with recycled or vintage materials. My main goal is to create jewels to wear everyday, that make people smile, to be worn at work (I worked as a secretary last year, not the work of my life but it really feels better when you are wearing something special!:D),during freetime or on a special occasion.

1. Qual è il nome del tuo negozio, cosa crei e vendi?

Il nome del mio negozietto è Wakamesalada, ovvero un'insalata di alghe che mi piace ordinare quando vado a mangiare giapponese. E' un piatto insolito, può piacere o non piacere, ma fa comunque bene alla salute e la stessa cosa in fondo si può dire riguardo ai colorati gioielli che creo, da 2 anni, con materiali riciclati o vintage. Il mio obiettivo principale è creare gioielli per tutti i giorni, che facciano sorridere chi li porta, indossabili al lavoro (fino all'anno scorso lavoravo come segretaria, non è il lavoro della mia vita ma effettivamente ci si sente meglio quando si indossa qualcosa di speciale! :D), durante il tempo libero o per un'occasione particolare.

2. What are your inspirations in your art and life?

I usually pay attention to everything happening around me, so inspiration can come from anything: someone I meet during a promenade, some look I have seen on a newspaper, a smell, a colour, a thought, a song. Sometimes I wake up or just cannot sleep because an idea suddenly comes to my mind, then I spend the rest of the night thinking about how to realize it. Most of times I first see the material (for example, gorgeous vintage buttons at a flea market, or a dress which cannot be worn anymore), then the piece comes by itself while I'm working on it, so it can end with something totally different from what I had thought about originally.

2. Qual è la tua fonte di ispirazione nell'arte e nella vita?

Sono abituata ad osservare tutto quello che mi sta intorno, quindi l'ispirazione può arrivare da qualsiasi cosa: qualcuno che incontro passeggiando, un look visto su un giornale, un profumo, un colore, una canzone. A volte mi sveglio durante la notte, o semplicemente non riesco a prendere sonno, perchè improvvisamente mi viene un'idea e trascorro il resto della nottata a pensare a come realizzarla al meglio. Molte volte, prima trovo il materiale (per esempio, dei fantastici bottoni vintage in un mercatino, o un vestito non più utilizzabile come tale), poi il gioiello si crea praticamente da solo mentre ci sto lavorando, quindi il risultato finale può essere diversissimo da quello che avevo progettato all'inizio.

3. Do you listen to music while you create? If so, what?

I usually listen to the radio while creating, but I am pretty eclectic: it can be rock, classic music, Björk, metal (mostly Dream Theater), or Royksopp, love them!But I can also work in complete silence, alone, listening to my neighbors trough my flat's thin walls.

3. Ascolti musica quando crei? E se si, quale?

Di solito ascolto la radio mentre creo, ma sono abbastanza eclettica in fatto di musica: posso mettere su del rock, della clasica, Björk, del metal (perlopiù Dream Theater) o i Royksopp, li adoro!Ma posso anche decidere di lavorare in silenzio, in perfetta solitudine, ascoltando i miei vicini attraverso le pareti sottili del mio appartamento.

4. What is your studio or work space like?

Complete chaos!!! I usually work on my table in the entrance,which right now is filled with buttons, fabric scraps, chains and ring bases. I wish I had a larger room with space for all my stuff, but I would also like to work outside, in a park for example!

4. Com'è il tuo studio o spazio creativo?

E' un caos completo!!! Di solito lavoro alla mia scrivania all'ingresso del mio appartamento, che ora è sommersa da bottoni, ritagli di tessuto, catene e basi per anelli.Vorrei avere una stanza più grande dove ci sia spazio per tutta la mia roba, ma non mi dispiacerebbe neanche lavorare all'aria aperta, in un parco per esempio!

5. What 3 things can’t you live without?

Definitely my mp3 playing my favourite music, my family and travelling.

Decisamente il mio mp3 con la mia musica preferita, la mia famiglia e viaggiare.

6. What is the best creative advice you have been given?

Never give up and add your personal touch to everything you create.

Non arrenderti mai e dai sempre il tuo tocco personale a tutto quel che crei.

7. What’s new? Any products or projects you’d like to share?

Just now I'm working on flower-shaped fabric jewelry, recycling fabric scraps and buttons in a fashionable way. You can already see some of my latest works in my shop, and I will be adding more during the next weeks. They're all one-of-a-kind to be worn on (at last) bare skin! This is my way to greet spring and summer.

7. Qual è la novità, il prodotto o progetto che ti piacerebbe condividere con noi?

Al momento sto lavorando a una collezione di gioielli floreali in tessuto, tramite la quale darò una nuova vita fashion a scampoli e bottoni. Potete già vedere alcuni dei miei ultimi lavori nel mio negozio, e altri verranno aggiunti nelle prossime settimane. Sono tutti pezzi unici da sfoggiare sulla pelle (finalmente) nuda! E' il mio modo di salutare la primavera e l'estate.
